Myth #3: I should wait until I’m accepted to a college before I fill out the FAFSA?

MYTH 3: I should wait until I’m accepted to a college before I fill out the FAFSA?

FACT: Why wait? You can start now! As a matter of fact, you can start as early as your senior year of high school. And, there's still time to apply for college & financial aid! Our community colleges and many 4-year college are still accepting applications for fall term.

Our goal is for the state to achieve a 52% FAFSA completion rate. The state currently sits at 35.9% FAFSA completion.

We’re using data from our FAFSA Completion Tool. We already have one district that has achieved a 93% completion rate!

Congratulations to the following districts that have made it over the 70% completion mark: Mc Clave RE-2, Frenchman RE-3, Eads RE-1, Stratton R-4, Prairie RE-1, Sanford 6J, Norwood R-2j, Mancos RE-6, Sargent RE-33J, and Genoa-Hugo C113!

Ready to boost your rate? Here are more ways to get involved:
  • Talk to your students about FAFSA myths--watch our Myth busters video series with Executive Director, Dr. Angie Paccione
  • Download talking points, posters, student handouts and more on our FAFSA resources page.
  • Embrace the “pie” theme! As a reward for reaching your FAFSA completion goal, have students “pie” a staff member in the face—and make sure to send us the video!
  • Host a FAFSA night or virtual event in your community. Check out this great toolkit from the U.S. Department of Education for templates, tools, sample programming and more.
Why does FAFSA completion matter?
Completing the FAFSA significantly increases the odds that students will continue their education—especially among low-income and students of color. Seniors who complete the FAFSA are 84% more likely to immediately enroll in postsecondary education. Boosting our FAFSA completion rate will boost our college-going rate, too.
